Gunfire erupts in Bessemer

As is usually the case, gunfire erupted on New Year's Eve in Bessemer.

So what's new?

Despite warnings from the Bessemer Police Department about firing guns in the city, everything from automatic weapons to small-caliber pistols were launched shortly before midnight, making many residents feel like they were living in the Gaza Strip.

One resident who saw BPD unit huddled for cover in a parking lot downtown between Regions Bank and the Bright Star called in to complain.

When he got an unsatisfactory answer he went back and shot pictures of the idle patrol cars.

The pictures are being forwarded to the City Council for further review.
