Say farewell


Friends and well-wishers turned out in droves today at the retirement party for Bessemer Circuit Court Clerk Earl Carter.

Carter, 67, spent 21 years as clerk for one of the busiest circuit courts in Alabama.

Before that, Carter was a bailiff.

Worker strike?


We reported in our print edition that this mess was cleaned up the other day after having sat for weeks. As it turned out it was another mess that was cleaned up, not this one. Downtown merchants are wondering if the Street and Sanitation Department is on strike because trash in alleys has sat for weeks on end. And it's supposed to be an election year.

Bingo goes in next year

Bessemer City Council President Earl Cochran today said there is a change of plans for the Bingo Committee.

Instead of calling a special session of the council, the committee will meet next Monday afternoon and present a resolution to the council at its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday.
